Maria Ludovika Beatrix, known as Maria Ludovica of Modena, was Empress Consort of Austria as the third wife of Emperor Francis I from 1808 to 1816. A granddaughter of Empress Maria Theresa, she came from a Modenese family and played a prominent role at the Viennese court, becoming a figure admired by the people and by部分 of the political class. During the Napoleonic Wars, she became known as an opponent of Napoleon and an advocate for Austria joining the coalition against France, a stance that brought her into conflict with Chancellor Klemens von Metternich and strained her marriage to Francis I. Influential with her husband, she intervened in state affairs and sought to act with a sense of justice even in wartime. She hosted the festivities connected to the Congress of Vienna (1814–1815) and retained social and political prominence until her health declined. Weakened by tuberculosis, she died in 1816 in Verona and was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, leaving a legacy of popularity and active public engagement during a period of intense European change.
