Farah Diba Pahlavi was the last queen and shabanu of Iran as the third wife and widow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Born into a wealthy family in Tehran, she studied architecture in Paris, where she met the shah; their marriage in 1959 and the birth of the heir in 1960 consolidated her public role. During her time as queen, Farah allied herself with cultural and social initiatives, encouraging the exchange of artistic collections with foreign institutions and serving as a patron of museums and cultural events. She also devoted herself to causes in education and health, using her influence to expand opportunities for women and young people. Her most notable project was the founding of Pahlavi University (now the University of Shiraz), modeled on the American system to modernize Iranian higher education and increase female enrollment. She also promoted social assistance institutions and the repatriation of archaeological artifacts to Iran. After the outbreak of the 1978–79 revolution and the fall of the monarchy, she left the country in 1979; in the following decades her figure remained associated with cultural patronage and the memory of the imperial era.
