Éric Rohmer (Jean‑Marie Maurice Schérer) was a filmmaker, critic, and literature professor who became a central figure of the French nouvelle vague and served as an editor of Cahiers du cinéma. Originally a critic, he moved into directing with short films in the 1950s and established his style with his first feature Le signe du lion (1959), especially with La Collectionneuse (1967). He created the well‑known cycles that define his work: the Six Moral Tales (1962–1972), Comedies and Proverbs, and the Tales of the Four Seasons, series in which he examines sentimental and moral dilemmas through disciplined dialogue and a narrative economy that prioritizes speech and close observation of behavior. His cinema, often described as elegant and austere, blends Catholic inspiration with moral sensitivity, expressed in seemingly simple stories that achieve a strong harmony between text and image. He received international recognition, winning awards at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, including the Grand Prix of the Jury (1976) and Golden Lions both for his career and for Le rayon vert (1986). Rohmer is remembered as a renovator of postwar French cinema, influencing generations through his formal rigor, emphasis on dialogue, and intimate portrayals of human choice.
