Eric Sevareid was an American journalist and author whose radio and television career at CBS spanned from 1939 to 1977. A member of the select group known as "Murrow's Boys," he rose to prominence as a war correspondent in World War II, becoming the first reporter to announce the fall of Paris in 1940 and covering events such as the Battle of Britain and the operations of Tito’s partisans.
Beyond field reporting, Sevareid held leadership roles at CBS, including chief of the Washington bureau and roving correspondent in Europe. He also served as a commentator on the CBS Evening News for thirteen years, a role for which he won Emmy and Peabody awards.
The author of memoirs and travel accounts—among them Canoeing with the Cree and Not So Wild a Dream—he maintained a strong connection to his Nordic roots and to formative experiences that shaped his journalistic outlook, from adventurous journeys around Hudson Bay to political coverage in the United States.
Known for a reflective commentary style and a critical stance toward demagogic excesses in contemporary politics, he is remembered as one of the central figures in twentieth‑century broadcast journalism.
