Erich Albert Hans Raeder was one of the most prominent German naval leaders of the early twentieth century, reaching the rank of Grand Admiral and commanding the German navy through the transition from the Weimar Republic to the Nazi regime. He entered the Imperial Navy in 1894 and distinguished himself in command service during World War I, advancing through the ranks to head the Reichsmarine from 1928. In the 1930s he supported Hitler’s naval rearmament plans and clashed with Hermann Göring over the allocation of resources between the navy and the air force. In 1939 he conceived and directed Operation Weserübung, securing the occupation of Denmark and Norway and strengthening German positions in the North Sea. He nonetheless criticized plans for a direct invasion of the United Kingdom, arguing for a focus on submarines and smaller surface forces. A succession of surface-navy setbacks and the relative success of the submarine campaign led to his replacement by Karl Dönitz in 1943 and his retirement. After the war he was tried at Nuremberg, convicted of crimes against peace, and later released on health grounds; his biography became a touchstone for his positions on the war and the German navy.
