Érik Comas is a former French racing driver who made his name in junior formulas and on Japanese circuits. He won the French Formula 3 Championship (1988) and the Formula 3000 title (1990), then reached Formula 1, where he contested 63 Grands Prix across four seasons with Ligier and Larrousse, scoring seven points and posting a best finish of fifth at the 1992 French Grand Prix. In F1 he is associated with two dramatic episodes: a crash during practice at Belgium in 1992 in which he was helped by Ayrton Senna, and the shock of the 1994 San Marino race, when Senna suffered the fatal accident. Those moments marked his brief spell in the category. After leaving Formula 1 at the end of 1994, he relocated to Japan to race in JGTC/Super GT, where he won the GT500 titles in 1998 and 1999, became one of the series’ top scorers, and later drove for teams including Nissan, Nismo and Toyota. He also competed in rallying and founded Comas Racing Management to develop young drivers. Health problems forced him to cut back his racing activities from 2006. He is remembered for a steady presence in touring and endurance racing and for successfully transitioning between international championships.
