Erik Satie was a French composer and pianist whose work broke with the conventions of his time and anticipated musical currents of the 20th century. Active in the Parisian avant‑garde, he became known for formal simplicity, unusual harmonies and witty titles; his miniatures and experiments with repetition made him a forerunner of minimalism and repetitive music.
Working in the cabarets and bohemian salons of Montmartre, Satie exerted direct influence on contemporaries such as Debussy and Ravel, and later on the group Les Six. He collaborated with leading figures in the arts — for example Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso — on innovative projects like the ballet Parade (1917), which incorporated unorthodox sounds and caused scandal.
Throughout his life he showed an interest in esoteric practices and a provocative stance toward artistic institutions: he founded a kind of personal “church” and defended ideas such as musique d'ameublement, treating music as a way to fill everyday spaces. His work, of lasting influence, was consolidated in famous compositions like the Trois Gymnopédies and in pieces that helped renew musical language in the 20th century.
