Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American writer. He worked as a war correspondent in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and that experience inspired one of his major works: For Whom the Bell Tolls. At the end of World War II (1939–1945), he settled in Cuba. In 1953, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and in 1954 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Throughout his life, the theme of suicide appears frequently in his writings, letters, and conversations. His father committed suicide in 1929 due to health and financial problems.
At age 61 and facing hypertension, diabetes, depression, and memory loss, on the morning of July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho, he shot himself with a rifle. He is buried in Ketchum Cemetery, in Ketchum, Blaine County, Idaho, United States.
