Ernst Jünger was one of the most controversial and influential literary and intellectual figures in twentieth-century Germany. An officer and veteran of the First World War, he gained notoriety with Storm of Steel (In Stahlgewittern, 1920), a diary-like testimony about the experience in the trenches that established him and projected him as an authoritative voice on combat and military suffering. His work combines war reporting, philosophical reflection and a formal austerity that shaped its critical reception. Throughout his life, Jünger developed an original thought marked by nationalism, militarism and a critique of modern ideologies, engaging with currents such as Nietzsche’s active nihilism and Heidegger’s concerns about technology and modernity. Despite sympathies and popularity among right-wing readers in the 1920s and 1930s, he refused formal ties to Nazism and published, in 1939, an allegory critical of totalitarianism in On the Marble Cliffs. Beyond his novels and political essays, Jünger produced photobooks and writings on technology, nature and human experience, exerting a lasting influence on German culture. His legacy remains defined by the tension between the exaltation of martial experience and critical reflection on authoritarianism and modernity.
