Esther Rantzen is an English journalist and broadcaster whose work on British television made her a public figure for decades. She became known as the presenter of the programme That's Life! from 1973 to 1994, a high‑rating format that combined investigation of social problems, public‑interest campaigns and entertainment elements.
From that platform, Rantzen expanded the social role of the media, promoting campaigns that led to concrete changes, such as greater visibility for organ donation and inquiries that contributed to the closure of a boarding institution with abusive practices. In 1976 she conceived the documentary series The Big Time, which launched artistic careers.
Her legacy also includes founding high‑impact philanthropic initiatives: she established Childline in 1986, the United Kingdom’s first national helpline for children at risk, and later created The Silver Line, aimed at combating loneliness among older people. For these and other contributions she received honorary distinctions and remains actively involved with charitable organisations.
