Ettore Majorana was an Italian physicist who did promising work on neutrinos and disappeared mysteriously in 1938.
He completed secondary school in 1923; then he regularly attended engineering studies in Rome until the beginning of the final year. In 1928, wishing to devote himself to pure science, he requested and obtained a transfer to the Faculty of Physics. He graduated in 1929 in theoretical physics under the supervision of Enrico Fermi, with the thesis The quantum theory of radioactive nuclei, receiving the highest mark with honors. In the following years, he attended the Institute of Physics in Rome informally, following scientific developments and conducting theoretical research on various topics.
On the night of 25 March 1938, Majorana left Naples for Palermo, where he spent a few days: the trip had been suggested by friends who had invited him for a period of rest. On 26 March he wrote to a friend. In his letters he never spoke of suicide, but only of disappearance - and he was a person careful with his words.
