Eugène Atget was a French photographer recognized as a forerunner of modern photography in Paris. A former actor and sailor, he became a photographer around the age of forty, developing a keen eye for everyday urban life: empty streets, facades, objects, and studio scenes that documented a Paris in transformation. His meticulous practice included hauling a large plate camera and systematically recording views and postcards, which also served as references for contemporary painters. Atget rejected photography centered on human presence, favoring absence and the materiality of objects—an approach later associated with surrealist sensibilities and documentary photography. He lived quietly and without recognition, selling many images for modest prices as he roamed the city for decades. His work only gained prominence posthumously, in part thanks to collector and photographer Berenice Abbott, who preserved, organized, and promoted thousands of negatives and prints. Today Atget is remembered for his decisive contribution to the urban vision and photographic memory of Paris, influencing subsequent generations of photographers and image historians.
