Evan Mecham was an American businessman and Republican politician who became Arizona’s chief executive, serving as the state’s 17th governor. Before his election he built a business career as the owner of car dealerships, publisher of local newspapers and proprietor of other family enterprises, and was a decorated World War II aviator. His public career included a term as a state senator and a series of unsuccessful campaigns that earned him a reputation as a perennial candidate until his surprise victory in 1986. Mecham’s administration was immediately controversial: statements and actions viewed as racially offensive, the rescinding of the paid observance of the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., and allegations of political patronage provoked strong public backlash and boycotts. Conflicts with elements of his own party, questions about certain appointments and accusations of misusing resources prompted legal actions against his administration. In 1988 he became the only Arizona governor to be impeached and removed from office after being convicted on charges of obstruction of justice and misappropriation of funds—charges he denied; a subsequent criminal trial acquitted him of related charges. After his removal he remained politically active for nearly a decade, attending conventions and mounting further campaigns without success. His legacy is disputed, encompassing both his business career and military service and his turbulent tenure as the state’s chief executive.
