Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick was an influential American intellectual in the fields of gender studies, queer theory and critical theory. A professor at institutions such as Duke and the CUNY Graduate Center, Sedgwick published works that helped found queer theory and transform literary criticism, notable for addressing hidden social codes and submerged plots in canonical authors. Her books Between Men (1985), Epistemology of the Closet (1990) and Tendencies (1993) are regarded as landmarks for their analyses of male homosociality, definitions of homo/heterosexuality and for introducing concepts widely debated in academia. She also proposed the reparative reading, which values texts’ productive and renewing effects in contrast to the hermeneutics of suspicion. In addition to her essays, Sedgwick worked at the intersection of literature, affect theory, psychoanalysis and material culture, with interests in Proust, affect theory and pedagogical practices. Her work influenced debates on sexuality, gender and critical methods, leaving a lasting legacy in the contemporary humanities.
