Fannie Hurst was an American novelist and short-story writer who enjoyed great commercial success in the decades after World War I. Her works, aimed largely at female readers, combined sentimental and romantic themes with contemporary social issues such as women’s rights and race relations, and they sold widely and were translated internationally. She published more than 300 stories and novels, including Lummox (1923), Back Street (1931) and Imitation of Life (1933); many were adapted for film — among them Imitation of Life and Humoresque — which significantly increased her public profile. At her peak in the 1920s she was among the highest-paid writers in the United States. Beyond her literary output, Hurst was active in social causes: she supported feminism, racial equality and New Deal programs, and served on commissions connected with the Roosevelt administration. Although literary critics became more reserved about her work from the 1930s–1940s onward, her role as a chronicler of the social tensions of her time and her popular influence secured her a prominent place in the American cultural landscape of the twentieth century.
