Faustina Kowalska (Helena Kowalska) was a Polish nun and Catholic mystic whose religious experiences gave rise to the modern devotion to Divine Mercy. A member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, she entered religious life in 1924 and performed humble duties such as cook and helper in the convents where she served, remaining responsible for everyday tasks despite the spiritual revelations she reported.
Her spiritual diary, written at the direction of her confessor, became the primary source for her visions and messages. In it she describes apparitions of the Merciful Jesus, the image to be painted bearing the inscription “Jesus, I trust in You,” and instructions that shaped devotional movements in the twentieth century. Theologians regard her as one of the most notable mystics of contemporary Christianity.
Faustina died in 1938 and was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who also instituted the Feast of Divine Mercy. Her legacy endures in popular devotion to divine mercy, the spread of her image, and her spiritual influence on international Catholic communities.
