Fernand (or Ferdinand) de Brinon, Marquis de Brinon, was a lawyer, journalist, and one of the principal architects of French collaboration with Nazi Germany during World War II. Working as a correspondent and influencer in the Paris press in the 1930s and 1940s, he cultivated close ties with German diplomats and leaders — including private meetings with Adolf Hitler and a friendship with Joachim von Ribbentrop — placing him at the center of efforts to bring France and Germany closer before the war. After France’s defeat in 1940, he became the Vichy regime’s representative to the German high command in Paris and coordinated propaganda and pro‑German cultural cooperation initiatives, such as the Groupe Collaboration. In 1942 he was given the title of Secretary of State, occupying a prominent position in the Vichy hierarchy and participating in structures that supported the anti‑Bolshevik struggle and other actions aligned with the Reich. With Vichy’s fall, he joined the German‑backed government‑in‑exile established in Sigmaringen, where he was named president of the commission charged with giving a legal façade to the collaborationist executive. Captured at the end of the war, he was tried by the French courts for collaboration, sentenced to death, and executed in 1947. His role remains an example of political and intellectual collaboration with the Nazi occupier in France.
