Ferdinand Jean Marie Foch was a French general whose military career and intellectual output made him a central figure in directing the Allied forces on the Western Front during the First World War. Trained in artillery and a professor at the École Supérieure de Guerre, he became known as a theorist of the offensive, author of works on the principles and conduct of war, and for his analyses of nineteenth‑century conflicts. In the 1914–1918 conflict, Foch rose to positions of great responsibility: he coordinated operations among French, Belgian and British armies, contributed decisively to the victory at the Marne, served as Chief of the French General Staff in 1917 and led the response in the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918. Promoted to Marshal of France in August 1918, he planned and directed the general offensive that hastened the armistice request in November of that year. After the war, he was a signatory of the Armistice of Compiègne, received honorary titles in the United Kingdom and Poland, and joined the Académie Française. His legacy combines operational achievements, influential military writings and an institutional role in the immediate postwar transition.
