Ferdinand II of Aragon

Ferdinand II of Aragon, called the Catholic, was one of the central monarchs in the formation of modern Spain. As King of Aragon from 1479 and co-ruler of Castile by right of his wife Isabella I, he pursued dynastic and military policies that united the crowns and consolidated monarchical power. During his reign the Reconquista was completed with the fall of Granada in 1492, and he sponsored Christopher Columbus’s first voyage—events that decisively expanded the international standing of the Catholic monarchs. Domestically, Ferdinand strengthened the royal administration: he established corregidores, helped create the Inquisition, and reorganized the royal treasury, while importing Aragonese institutions to promote Castilian trade. A diplomat and strategist, he was heavily involved in Italy and the Mediterranean, forming alliances and leading military operations (including the Holy League and the campaign in Naples) to confront France and extend his possessions. His dynastic policy arranged marriages that tied the Spanish monarchy into the European network—among them unions with Portugal, England and the Habsburgs—and enabled the rise of his grandson Charles. Ferdinand’s legacy is ambivalent: he laid foundations for the Spanish state and overseas expansion, but also enacted measures of religious uniformity and centralization that deeply marked Iberian history.
