Ferdinand von Bredow was a major general in the German Army (Reichswehr) and head of military intelligence at the Ministry of Defense during the Weimar Republic. A close collaborator and right-hand man of Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher, he became known as a political operator and head of a personal intelligence network that brought together several secret services of the time. His activity was at the heart of Schleicher’s efforts to influence and reshape the government in the turbulent years between 1932 and 1934. Bredow took part in the political negotiations involving Hitler during the brief period in which Schleicher sought support, and later helped prepare alternative government proposals, circulating ministerial lists that reflected his patron’s strategy for regaining power. This stance, regarded by contemporaries as imprudent, provided ammunition for political opponents who turned intrigue into a pretext for repression. In the purge known as the Night of the Long Knives, Bredow was arrested and executed by SS members linked to the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler on 30 June 1934. His death symbolizes both the elimination of the Schleicher faction and the use of political violence to consolidate the Nazi regime. Decorated for his service in World War I, his memory is associated with the role of the Army and intelligence services in the power struggles of prewar Germany.
