Infante of Spain, Fernando de Borbon y Braganza was a member of the legitimist line that supported Carlism in the 19th century and spent most of his life in exile with his family. Born at court, he was the son of Infante Carlos de Bourbon and the grandson, on his mother’s side, of kings Carlos IV and João VI; his dynastic position and the succession crises of the period shaped his political and personal life. Loyal to his father’s cause, Fernando participated in Carlist efforts after the First Carlist War, but defeat and financial difficulties forced him into a long exile across Europe. In 1845 he and his brother joined the army of the Kingdom of Sardinia under the protection of Charles Albert, reflecting military ties with other European royal houses. He settled with his family in Trieste, where he lived until his father’s death in 1855. Fernando did not marry and left no known descendants. He died in 1861 in Eichfeld of an infectious fever; his body was transferred and buried in the chapel of St. Charles Borromeo in the Cathedral of San Giusto in Trieste.
