Flora Murray was a Scottish physician, a pioneer of hospital practice by women and a suffrage activist. Trained in medicine in the early 20th century, she specialized in pediatrics and public health, publishing work on anesthesia in children and a thesis on asylum organization. She worked in London hospitals and devoted herself to caring for imprisoned women and militants of the suffrage movement, treating victims of violence and hunger during campaigns for women’s suffrage.
In 1912 she founded, with Louisa Garrett Anderson, the Women’s Hospital for Children, intended to serve children of working-class families and to provide clinical experience for women doctors. With the outbreak of the First World War, the two created the Women’s Hospital Corps and ran field hospitals in France and, later, the Endell Street Military Hospital in London, an institution that treated tens of thousands of soldiers between 1915 and 1919.
Recognized for her medical and organizational role, Murray was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1917. After the war she returned to private practice, published memoirs about her military experience and maintained a close personal and professional life with Louisa Garrett Anderson. Her legacy is linked to the expansion of women’s roles in medicine and to military medical care organized by women physicians.
