Mary Frances Tarlton “Sissy” Farenthold was an American politician, lawyer, activist, and educator whose work influenced the women’s movement and progressive politics in the post–Cold War era. Elected in 1968 to the Texas House of Representatives, she was the only woman in the state legislature at the start of her term and took part in reform efforts and the coalition known as the “Dirty Thirty,” which pushed for greater transparency and ethics in Texas government. In the 1970s and 1980s Farenthold rose to national prominence when she twice sought the Democratic nomination for governor of Texas (1972 and 1974) and was a candidate for the vice presidential nomination at the 1972 Democratic National Convention, winning substantial delegate support. In 1973 she became the first president of the National Women’s Political Caucus, helping to organize and train women for elective office. As an educator and civic leader, she served as president of Wells College (1976–1980) and founded the Public Leadership Education Network in 1978 to promote training for women leaders. She also worked with human rights and peace organizations, including an early predecessor of Human Rights Watch and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, remaining active internationally on issues of disarmament and human rights. Her legacy includes advancing women’s political participation, advocating ethical reforms in politics, and building links between academic institutions and grassroots movements to train new public leaders.
