Francis Jammes was a French poet and novelist associated with the Béarn region and the Basque Country, where he spent most of his life. Largely self-taught and indifferent to the Parisian avant-garde, he became known for a plain style, rural imagery and an intimate sensibility that influenced writers such as Alain-Fournier and François Mauriac. Initially passed over for the literary success expected of him, Jammes received support from Parisian figures like André Gide and Paul Claudel, with whom he maintained friendships and who helped lead him to a decisive religious conversion in 1905. From that point his work took on a marked Christian character, alternating poetry and prose imbued with faith and rural life. He also published a satirical manifesto known as “jammisme,” and experienced phases of critical recognition interspersed with periods of isolation and doubt. Although his reception declined in France in later decades, his work retained readers abroad, especially in German-speaking countries. Remaining outside modern movements, Jammes left a legacy of accessible, devotional poetry that celebrates nature and rural everyday life with direct language and a religious tone.
