Francis Vanverberghe, known as Francis le Belge, was a central figure in organized crime in France, regarded as one of the last “godfathers” of the Marseille milieu. Born in Marseille, he stood out from a young age for leading a gang in Belle de Mai and for repeated involvement in prostitution, violence, and trafficking; his career brought him into the circle of the French Connection and to financing heroin-trafficking operations in the 1970s and 1980s. Bloody confrontations marked his career: disputes with rivals such as Tany Zampa set off a series of murders and reprisals that ended in trials and long prison sentences. Convicted in multiple cases for trafficking, pimping, and illegal possession of weapons, he spent about eleven years incarcerated, a period during which he developed his reading habits and contacts that drew him closer to Parisian circles and the fashion world. After releases and judicial relaxations, Vanverberghe regained influence over nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in the Aix-en-Provence area and around Marseille, consolidating a network of allies and henchmen. His activities helped trigger a wave of violence known as the “war of the clubs,” with multiple murders and attacks from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Francis le Belge’s legacy is ambivalent: seen by many as an archetype of Marseille’s great banditry, he left a lasting imprint on the history of organized crime in France, both through the scope of his operations and the social and judicial impact of the conflicts in which he was involved.
