Franky Zapata is a French personal watercraft racer and technology entrepreneur, known for being a multiple-time Jet Ski world champion and cofounder of the Zapata Racing team. Trained as a mechanic, he built his career in PWC racing before turning to the invention and industrialization of individual propulsion systems for water and air. From 2011 to 2014 he developed and patented the Flyboard and subsequent versions such as the Flyboard Air, personal jet‑propelled vehicles that drew international attention for recreational, demonstration and study uses with potential professional applications. In 2019 he became the first person to cross the English Channel on a Flyboard Air, an operation supported by escort and refueling that increased his public profile. His business activities include the sale of Zapata Racing and the founding of companies such as Z‑AIR, which have received institutional support for research. At the same time, incidents involving flights over restricted airspace and technical limitations — noise, range and safety — have posed regulatory and operational challenges to development. Zapata’s legacy combines high‑performance sport, innovation in personal transport vehicles and efforts to turn prototypes into commercial products and industrial, medical and entertainment applications.
