Franz Lehár was an Austrian composer of Hungarian origin, celebrated above all for his operettas that helped define the light lyric repertoire of the early twentieth century. Trained at the Prague Conservatory and initially attached to military bands—where he worked as a violinist and conductor—Lehár moved to Vienna and devoted himself to composition, achieving worldwide fame with The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe, 1905).
His output includes popular titles such as The Land of Smiles (Il Paese del Sorriso, 1929), as well as widely circulated waltzes and dances like Gold und Silber (Gold and Silver). The success of his operettas secured his financial and cultural position in Vienna, leading him to found a music publishing house and to maintain long-standing relationships with theaters such as the Theater an der Wien and the Politeama in Trieste.
Lehár’s personal life was also entwined with historical events: he married Sophie Meth, of Jewish background, whom he helped protect during World War II with the assistance of others, and he spent his final years in Bad Ischl. His legacy endures in the light operatic tradition and in the repertoire of European musical theatre.
