Frederick Cheney LaRue Sr. was a political aide and fundraiser associated with the Republican Party and Richard Nixon’s campaigns. A businessman who used his own funds, he invested in various ventures and served on the Republican National Committee during the 1960s, supporting candidacies such as Barry Goldwater’s and helping to coordinate electoral strategy in the U.S. South. During the transition to the White House and throughout the Nixon administration, LaRue acted as an informal adviser, working with then–Attorney General John N. Mitchell on political initiatives and on coordinating regional and legal support. He is noted for participating in the development of the so-called “Southern strategy” and for communication efforts aimed at country voters. LaRue became a central figure in the Watergate scandal by serving as a financial intermediary: he delivered payments intended to silence participants in the break‑in and was involved in destroying documents related to the operation. In 1973 he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, served a short sentence, and refused to testify against other administration members. LaRue’s public legacy remains tied both to his influence on Republican campaigns of the era and to his role in the Watergate cover‑up, a fact that defined his career and reputation.
