Fred Polak (Frederik Lodewijk Polak) was a Dutch sociologist and thinker regarded as one of the founders of future studies. Trained in law, economics, and philosophy, he devoted himself from the 1940s to research on social images of the future, a theme crystallized in his best-known work, The Image of the Future, in which he examines how collective representations of the future shape cultural and historical processes. During and after World War II he held public and academic posts: he joined the Central Planning Bureau of the Netherlands, served as a government adviser on employment and education policy, taught in Rotterdam, and occupied leadership positions in industrial and cultural organizations. He received fellowships from institutions such as UNESCO and the Ford Foundation and earned awards for his work in futurology. Beyond his academic output, he engaged in politics—serving as a senator for the Labour Party and cofounding DS'70—and helped institutionalize long-term studies by founding the broadcaster Teleac and taking part in foundations and societies devoted to technology assessment and future planning. His work is praised for its historical range and erudition, though critics point to uneven analytical rigor over his career; he remains a touchstone for studies of collective imagination and social projections of the future.
