Friedrich August von Hayek was an Austrian-born economist and social philosopher who became a British citizen, recognized as one of the leading figures of the Austrian School. His work combined economics, legal philosophy, epistemology, intellectual history and psychology, and mounted a sustained defense of classical liberalism and of spontaneous order as a mechanism for social coordination.

In economics he became known for his monetary theory and his analysis of economic fluctuations, research that earned him the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974, shared with Gunnar Myrdal. His essay “The Use of Knowledge in Society” is regarded as a landmark for explaining how prices convey information and enable the coordination of individual actions.

Over the course of his career he taught at institutions such as the London School of Economics, the University of Chicago and Freiburg, and played an active role in postwar liberal intellectual networks like the Mont Pèlerin Society. He received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United States (1991). His legacy remains influential in twentieth‑century debates on economics, social theory and political philosophy.
