Friedrich Olbricht was a German Army general whose career and command positions placed him at the center of the resistance against the Nazi regime. A professional officer since before World War I, he became known in the following decades for staff appointments and for leading high command bodies, including the Army General Office and the Armed Forces Reserve Service. Those roles gave him authority over appointments and the mobilization of units, a resource crucial to the conspirators. From 1941–42, Olbricht adapted the Valkyrie plan—originally conceived as a mechanism to contain internal disturbances—turning it into a blueprint for a coup against Hitler. He coordinated contacts between resistance circles and placed loyal officers in strategic posts; in 1943 he invited Claus von Stauffenberg to his position, a central figure in the 20 July 1944 assassination attempt. On the day of the attempt, Olbricht activated Operation Valkyrie to seize command in Berlin, but the failure of the bombing and the rapid recapture of key points prevented the coup from succeeding. Arrested at the Bendlerblock, he was summarily executed that same night. His strategic role and willingness to risk everything to overthrow the regime contributed to the legacy of military opposition to Nazism.
