Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling was a German philosopher central to German Idealism and Romanticism, whose work sought to articulate nature, spirit, and the Absolute. Over his career he reconsidered methods and systems, moving from transcendental philosophy to the philosophy of nature and, between 1801 and 1806, to the so-called “philosophy of identity.” That period drew criticism from Hegel and led Schelling to abandon the project. In the course of his thought, Schelling explored varied themes: aesthetics, mythology, revelation, critiques of dualism, and a dynamic conception of nature. In works such as Philosophical Inquiries into the Essence of Human Freedom and The Ages of the World he examined the primordial rupture from the Absolute and the condition of human freedom—projects that remained partly unfinished. His later philosophy revisited the relation between religion and philosophy, with texts on mythology and revelation, and defended a conception of life’s concreteness against dialectical abstractions. Schelling’s thought influenced figures such as Heidegger, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and later thinkers interested in ontology and materialism.
