Fritz Gause was a German historian, archivist and curator, recognized as the leading scholar of the former city of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad). His most significant work is the three-volume monograph Die Geschichte der Stadt Königsberg in Preußen, which systematized the city’s urban and cultural history across the centuries. Gause directed the City Museum, the Municipal Archive and the Public Library of Königsberg until those collections were destroyed in the final years of World War II. After the war he was detained in Poland and, released in 1947, resumed teaching and cultural work in West Germany, taking an active role in the community of Königsberg exiles and founding the Haus Königsberg, a center for preserving the city’s memory. He received the honorary title of professor from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1972. Gause’s figure is marked by controversy: his later positions and publications sought to legitimize territorial claims and nationalist narratives, omitting or downplaying episodes involving minorities and occupation practices. Consequently, his work remains a valuable historical source but is also criticized for partiality and documentary omissions.
