Friedrich Adolph “Fritz” Traun was a German athlete and tennis player whose brief career drew notice in the early decades of modern sport. Born into a wealthy Hamburg family, he earned a doctorate in science and balanced scientific and business endeavors with active participation in athletics and tennis. In 1896 he took part in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, where he competed in the 800 m and in the tennis tournament — in the latter he won the gold medal in doubles alongside John Pius Boland.

Beyond his Olympic success, Traun set pioneering German marks in the long jump and worked as a sports journalist, organizer, and official — he served as director and referee of the German tennis championships in Hamburg. After a scientific stint at the Sorbonne, he joined the family business and traveled to the United States on business, but his health was weakened by tuberculosis, which obliged him to spend time at Alpine spas.

Traun’s public career reflects sporting innovation and the social engagement of the German elite at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. His legacy is connected to the history of German tennis and to the memory of the first modern Olympic Games.
