Gabriel Urbain Fauré was one of the most important French composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, also working as an organist, pianist, and teacher. His core output includes lyrical and chamber works—such as the Pavane, the Requiem, the piano nocturnes, and the song Après un rêve—and displays a harmonic and melodic language that anticipated trends of musical modernism. Trained at the École Niedermeyer and influenced by masters such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Fauré held prominent positions, including organist at the Church of La Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatory. Even while carrying administrative and liturgical duties that limited his time for composing, he maintained a body of work admired by critics and colleagues. Fauré’s music forms a bridge between Romanticism and modernism: flowing piano textures, a shifting harmony inspired by Gregorian modes, and melodies of rare elegance. Despite suffering progressive hearing loss in his later decades, he established a national reputation and a lasting influence on French musical teaching and composition.
