Gabriel Figueroa was one of Mexico’s most important cinematographers and a central figure of the so‑called Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Over more than five decades he photographed about 235 films, working on domestic productions and collaborations in Hollywood, and became known for his technical mastery, careful composition, and dramatic use of chiaroscuro that recalled pictorial references. His partnership with filmmaker Emilio Fernández produced works awarded at international festivals and helped shape a cinematic image of Mexico recognized abroad. He received nine Ariel Awards and the Ariel de Oro for his career, won cinematography prizes at Cannes and Venice, and was nominated for an Academy Award for The Night of the Iguana (1964), becoming the first Mexican cinematographer to be nominated in that category. Originally trained in painting, Figueroa applied an artistic sensitivity to light and composition, influenced by studies in Hollywood where he observed masters such as Gregg Toland. His legacy is evident in the aesthetics of numerous Mexican classics and in international retrospectives and exhibitions that have reassessed his technical and cultural contribution to cinema.
