Gabriel García Márquez was one of the most influential Latin American writers of the 20th century, internationally recognized for his contribution to magical realism. Trained as a journalist, he worked for several newspapers and served as a foreign correspondent, an experience that nourished his prose and sharpened his critical view of Latin America’s political and social realities. His best-known work, One Hundred Years of Solitude, became a literary landmark by recounting the saga of the Buendía family in Macondo, establishing García Márquez as a global reference and earning him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Other important titles include The Autumn of the Patriarch, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Love in the Time of Cholera, works that explore solitude, power, and memory. Beyond his novels, he wrote journalism, short stories, and screenplays, participated in film, and founded an international film school in Cuba, demonstrating a commitment to cultural education in the region. His legacy crosses languages and generations, influencing writers and remaining a constant presence in discussions about literature, identity, and Latin American history.
