Gabriele Münter was a German painter associated with Expressionism and a central figure in Munich’s avant-garde. Educated at schools for women and at the progressive Phalanx school, she met Wassily Kandinsky there and co‑founded the Neue Künstlervereinigung München, the group that gave rise to the core of the Blaue Reiter. Her work developed under the influence of Fauvism and through travels in Europe and North Africa, producing paintings with intense colors, defined shapes and dark contours that anticipated abstract tendencies. Throughout her career she divided her time between Murnau, Munich, Cologne and periods in Paris; she produced landscapes, still lifes and portraits that are now part of collections such as the Lenbachhaus. From 1937 she was banned from exhibiting by the Nazi regime and withdrew from public life, resuming activity with less consistency in subsequent decades. During World War II Münter saved more than eighty paintings by the Blaue Reiter and from her own collection, preserving a decisive legacy for the memory of the movement — a collection she later donated to the city of Munich. Her house in Murnau now operates as a museum and preserves part of this artistic history.
