Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaulti de Galilei was a Florentine astronomer, physicist and engineer, frequently referenced as "father of observational astronomy", "father of modern physics", "father of the scientific method" and "father of modern science".

Galileo studied the principle of relativity and phenomena such as speed and velocity, gravity and free fall, inertia and projectile motion, but he also worked in applied science and technology. In this context, he described the properties of pendulums and "hydrostatic balances", invented the thermoscope and several military compasses, and used the telescope for scientific observations of celestial objects. His contributions to observational astronomy include the visual confirmation of the phases of Venus, the observation of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, the observation of the rings of Saturn and the study of sunspots.

Galileo defended the controversial heliocentrism and Copernicanism, when most adopted geocentric models.

He was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy" and forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. While under house arrest, he wrote the work Duas Novas Ciências, in which he summarized the work done, about forty years earlier, in the two sciences now called kinematics and strength of materials.
