Gaston Louis Chevrolet was a French-born racing driver and automobile builder active in the United States in the early 20th century. The younger brother of Louis and Arthur Chevrolet, he joined them at the Frontenac Motor Corporation and worked as a mechanic and builder, helping to advance American racing cars against the then-dominance of European designs. In 1920 he cemented his sporting reputation by winning the Indianapolis 500 behind the wheel of a redesigned Monroe-Frontenac, becoming the first driver to complete the race without changing tires. In the same season he scored enough points to be crowned the AAA national champion, a title later disputed by revisionist publications, although contemporary sources confirm his championship. Gaston’s success was tragically short-lived: he died at the end of 1920 in a crash at the Beverly Hills Speedway during the season’s final race. His death ended a brief but notable career and left a mark on American racing history and the Chevrolet family’s legacy. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002.
