Gaston Salvayre (Gervais Bernard Gaston Salvayre) was a French composer and music critic whose work belongs to the lyrical and sacred repertoire of late 19th‑century France. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris under Ambroise Thomas, he rose to prominence by winning the Grand Prix de Rome in 1872 with the cantata Calypso; the prize allowed him to study at the Villa Medici, where he soon composed a Stabat Mater that was well received by critics. His output includes operas, ballets, orchestral and chamber music, piano and organ pieces, as well as an extensive body of art songs and sacred music. Notable works include the operas Le Bravo (1877) and Egmont (1886), the ballet Le Fandango (1877), and sacred works such as Le Jugement Dernier and the biblical symphony La Vallée de Josaphat. Salvayre was also the author of numerous songs set to texts by recognized poets, and his vocal works are documented in national musical archives. After a long career in Paris, he returned to the Toulouse region, where he died in 1916, leaving a legacy chiefly in French musical theatre and sacred music.
