Terence Michael Joseph "Geezer" Butler is an English bassist and songwriter, best known for his role in Black Sabbath, a band that helped pioneer heavy metal. In the 1970s he was the group's principal lyricist and played a decisive part in shaping the band's dark sound and themes, addressing death, religion, and destruction. His technical influence is notable: he was among the first to use the wah-wah pedal on bass and to tune a whole step down (D), a practice that spread through metal.
Besides his central work with Sabbath, Butler has taken part in numerous side projects and collaborations, including periods working with Ozzy Osbourne and founding G/Z/R, which released albums such as Plastic Planet and Black Science. In the 1990s and 2000s he was involved in reunions and recordings with different Black Sabbath lineups and in the Heaven and Hell project, which united members from the Dio era.
His legacy is acknowledged both for technical innovation on the bass and for creating a lyrical imagination that helped define heavy metal. He is regarded as one of the genre's most influential bassists, whose work has influenced subsequent generations of musicians.
