Gene Cernan was an American astronaut, naval aviator, and electrical and aerospace engineer, best known for commanding the final Apollo mission to land on the Moon. He flew three space missions: pilot of Gemini 9A (1966); lunar module pilot on Apollo 10 (1969), the “dress rehearsal” that validated key procedures for the Apollo 11 landing; and commander of Apollo 17 (1972), when he became the last man to walk on the lunar surface and accumulated the most lunar EVA time of any astronaut. Before joining NASA, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue and a master’s in aerospace engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served as a naval aviator and fighter pilot, logging thousands of flight hours and numerous carrier landings, and reached the rank of captain before retiring from the Navy. His work in the Apollo program included significant crew decisions and advocacy for his team, as well as technical and operational contributions to the missions. Cernan is remembered both for his skill as a pilot and commander and for his key role in the final era of crewed lunar missions, leaving a lasting mark on the history of space exploration.
