Geoffry Ashe (Geoffrey Thomas Leslie Ashe) was a British cultural historian and popular writer, known for his studies of King Arthur and for making historical research accessible to the public. Educated at the University of British Columbia and Trinity College, Cambridge, he spent much of his career examining the historical foundations of Arthurian legend, arguing, among other hypotheses, that the historical king underlying the stories might have been Riothamus. His work combined documentary analysis with archaeological findings, notably his interpretation of excavations at Cadbury Castle, which bolstered the plausibility of local traditions about a regional power in the early Middle Ages. A prolific author, he published reference works on Arthur and on British landscapes and traditions, including King Arthur's Avalon (1957) and The Discovery of King Arthur (1985), and wrote on diverse topics such as mythology, prophecy and cultural history. He was a cofounder and secretary of the Camelot Research Committee and took part in excavations and scholarly debates that influenced Arthurian historiography. Recognized for his contributions to cultural heritage, he later accepted honours such as the MBE (2012) and the title of Honorary Freeman of Glastonbury (2015); in 2013 he received recognition from the International Arthurian Society. He died in Glastonbury in January 2022, leaving a legacy as a popularizer and scholar of British traditions.
