Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor was a mathematician born in the Russian Empire and trained in the German tradition, recognized as the founder of modern set theory. His principal work introduced the concept of transfinite numbers and the distinction between cardinals and ordinals, showing that different infinities have different magnitudes — a result expressed in the proof that the real numbers are not countable while the rationals are. The diagonal argument associated with his name became a central tool in that demonstration. Throughout his career, Cantor published decisive contributions on sets, the construction of transcendental numbers and fundamental questions about the continuum. In 1897 he identified paradoxes inherent in set theory, problems that shaped the later development of the field and prompted axiomatic investigations during the twentieth century. His attempt to prove the continuum hypothesis remained inconclusive; it was later shown to be undecidable in certain formal systems. Cantor’s personal life included a long tenure at the University of Halle and episodes of mental fragility that affected his life and work. Despite these difficulties, his intellectual legacy is profound: as David Hilbert summarized, no one could be driven out “of the paradise that Cantor created,” referring to the new mathematical horizon he opened.
