George of Brandenburg-Ansbach, known as George the Pious (1484–1543), was margrave of the Hohenzollern house and a central figure in spreading the Protestant Reformation in parts of Germany and Upper Silesia. Born into a princely family, he served at the Hungarian court and, by royal appointment, received the duchies of Opole and Ratibor, considerably expanding his political and territorial influence in the region. As creditor and ruler of those domains, George encouraged the introduction of Lutheran ideas earlier than many German princes, keeping correspondence with and meeting Martin Luther and other reformers. He promoted the reorganization and protection of evangelical preachers, the secularization of monastic properties for educational purposes, and the founding of schools to train clergy and administrators. Collectively, he took part in initiatives for evangelical concord, such as the meeting at Schleiz (1529) that preceded the Articles of Schwabach, and he acted at imperial diets defending Protestant preaching while not endorsing armed resistance. His political and ecclesiastical actions left a legacy in the consolidation of the evangelical church in Brandenburg-Ansbach, Nuremberg and Upper Silesia.
