Johann Georg Adam Forster was a German naturalist, ethnologist, traveler and journalist whose work shaped the scientific Enlightenment of the late 18th century. He gained early recognition by accompanying his father on James Cook’s second voyage to the Pacific; the account of that expedition, A Voyage Round the World, became a touchstone in the ethnology of Polynesian peoples and secured his election to the Royal Society at age 22. Back in Europe, Forster devoted himself to teaching and editorial work: he lectured in natural history at institutions such as the Collegium Carolinum (Kassel) and the Academy of Vilnius, served as head librarian at the University of Mainz, and translated and wrote introductions to important travel journals. His scientific output covered botany and ethnology, including still‑consulted studies on the flora of Pacific islands. Influential in the German intellectual sphere, he corresponded with leading Enlightenment figures and shaped later naturalists, notably Alexander von Humboldt. Politically engaged, he took part in the Mainz Republic after the French occupation; exiled and declared a fugitive when the city was retaken, he died in Paris in 1794. His legacy endures in the history of the natural sciences and travel literature.
