Georg Joachim Rheticus, born Georg Joachim de Porris, was a mathematician, astronomer, cartographer, maker of navigational instruments, physician and professor whose work marked the scientific transition of the sixteenth century. A disciple of Nicolaus Copernicus, he is chiefly remembered for promoting the publication of De revolutionibus orbium coelestium and for writing the first printed presentation of the Copernican system, the Narratio prima (1540), which introduced heliocentric ideas to the European academic community.
Rheticus produced foundational work in trigonometry and in trigonometric tables that served as the basis for nautical and astronomical calculations for centuries; this effort culminated in the Opus palatinum de triangulis, completed posthumously by Valentinus Otho and published in 1596, containing extensive tabulations of trigonometric functions. He also published maps and technical treatises, such as the Tabula chorographica and the Canon doctrinae triangulorum.
His personal life was turbulent: after a trial in which he was found guilty of sexual abuse, he was exiled from Leipzig, lost patronage and property, and went on to teach in various towns across Central Europe. Despite the controversies, Rheticus’s scientific legacy — especially in promoting heliocentrism and in developing applied trigonometry — remained influential for centuries.
