George Robert Phillips McFarland, known by the stage nickname “Spanky,” was an American child actor who rose to prominence as the lead in Hal Roach’s Our Gang shorts, later syndicated on television as The Little Rascals. Between 1932 and 1942 he starred in 95 entries in the series and had the title role in the feature General Spanky (1936), establishing himself as a comic leader of the child troupe alongside peers such as Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer.
Beyond the Hal Roach comedies, McFarland appeared in supporting roles in several 1930s features, including Kentucky Kernels and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, showing range as a juvenile performer. After leaving Our Gang in adolescence, he faced the strong stigma attached to the kind of role that had made him famous, which hindered his continuation in the film industry.
As an adult he pursued varied careers — he served in the Air Force, worked in retail and sales, and achieved success as a sales executive and national training director at Philco‑Ford. In later decades he devoted himself to public appearances and talks about his childhood experience and organized benefit events, keeping alive the cultural memory of Spanky as an emblematic figure of American child cinema.
