George Garfield Nader Jr. was an American actor and writer of Lebanese descent, active mainly from the 1950s through the 1970s. He became known for roles in studio films—especially at Universal—including westerns and dramas, and for starring in low‑budget science‑fiction productions; he is remembered for the title role in Robot Monster (1953), a film that, despite critical derision, boosted his career. He also worked with figures such as Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis and Audie Murphy and won the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer in 1955. On television he maintained a steady presence in the period’s series and anthology programs and headlined shows such as The Man and the Challenge and Shannon. From the 1960s he moved part of his career to Europe, where he played FBI agent Jerry Cotton in a popular German film series. His filmography also includes titles produced in the Philippines, Spain and Hong Kong. Late in his career a car accident that impaired his vision led him to leave acting and devote himself to writing; among his works is the science‑fiction novel Chrome (1978), which depicts a same‑sex relationship in a positive light. He lived with his partner Mark Miller and, discreetly, was part of Rock Hudson’s close circle. He died in 2002 of cardiopulmonary complications.
